In the Android OS we have two kinds of recovery mode: stock or custom. The stock recovery mode Android provide you to install updates or clear data and system or dalvik cache. The custom version can provide you much more.

To enter the Android recovery mode, you need to power off device and then press and hold key combination, in basicaly it:

  • Volume up + power on
  • Volume down + power on
  • Home + volume up + power on buttons
If you want to enter recovery mode and don’t know your combination – ask me in the comments!

After enter this mode you can navigate on the list using volume buttons, to confirm select just  press the power button. Be careful, if you will select “Wipe data” – it will erase all user data!

Recovery

To exit navigate go to “Exit” or “Reboot” line and confirm your select. If you want to know more about custom versions (TWRP or CWM) – read articles below.

Install CWM Recovery

The CWM Recovery can provide you to install custom rom’s, create backups of all system and get root rights. Here we got two guides, how to install CWM Recovery img on devices with root access.

Installing CWM Recovery can be done with the help of the official CWM installer:

  1. Install the app from Google Play and grant root rights
  2. Open the application and click Recovery Setup
  3. In the window that opens, click “ClockworkMod Recovery” and confirm the model of your device. During this step you can click on three dots in the upper right corner and open the advanced mode, this will allow you to download the CWM of the version that you need
  4. In the last window, click “Install ClockworkMod” and the program will start downloading and installing
  5. After installation, load into CWM to verify the installation result

Another CWM Recovery install method assumes that you already have CWM Recovery img file, if you don’t have that – write your model in the comments and I’ll give you a link for download.

  1. Install Flashify app
  2. Grant root access for this app
  3. Tap on “recovery image”
  4. Choose CWM img file
  5. Click on “Yup”

Install TWRP Recovery

TWRP Recovery is the most popular custom recovery for Android devices. Almost every custom ROM required it for normal install. The TWRP Recovery install is not difficult, here some method how to do it.

For a start, get Root rights and download the TWRP Recovery install app  from Google Play. Open the application and allow the superuser rights. The menu is very simple, so the probability of mistake during TWRP Recovery install is minimal.  Just follow instruction:

  1. Enter your device in the “Device name” line and click “Recovery version to installation”
  2. In the opened window there will be a list to download TWRP, select the latest available version
  3. Click “Install Recovery”

When your smartphone has an Mediatek CPU you can install TWRP using the MobileUncle Tools, you need to follow only a few steps:

  1. Download the TWRP recovery file for your device
  2. Download MobileUncle Tools, it is the same as ToolHero
  3. Run the application and click “Recovery Update”
  4. Select the downloaded file and click OK

Install custom Recovery

To install custom recovery, it is not necessary to have root access. Using your PC and your debugging mode, you can install custom recovery manually using the instructions below.

If you can’t find the custom recovery for your device – just write model name in the comments and I’ll give you a link!

If you know how to flash the phone using the SP Flash Tool, then there will not be much new information for you. Download and install the SP Flash Tool and drivers for your phone. Now you need to download the Recovery for your device, after the download, save your new recovery in a convenient place:

  1. Launch the Flash Tool and immediately in the settings, tick the “DA DL ALL WITH Check Sum”
  2. Then click on “Scatter Loading” and select the Scatter file from the archive with the downloaded recovery, or take the Scatter from the official firmware
  3. After that, you can click on the start and connect the phone in firmware mode

Everything with “how to install Recovery with Odin” is almost the same as in the firmware of the smartphone. The main thing here is that you do not need root rights to install recovery using Odin:
